    When you’re deciding what type of window treatment you want in your home — and energy conservation is a major factor in your decision — you may be overwhelmed by terms like R-value, shading coefficient, UV transmittance and more.
     

    Here’s what they all mean:

    • R-Value rates the effectiveness of a window covering at preventing energy from flowing to the outside. The higher the R-Value number, the more insulation it provides.
    • Shading Coefficient measures the heat going through the window when the window treatment is used versus the heat gain through a bare window. The lower the shading coefficient, the better the heat reduction.
    • UV Transmittance measures a window covering’s effectiveness at preventing ultra violet rays from entering an interior. The percentage ratings indicate the amount of possible UV rays that actually penetrate the window covering into the interiors. The lower the UV percentage, the more protection it provides.
    • Solar Transmittance is the percentage of solar energy allowed to pass through the window covering.
    • Solar Reflectance is the percentage of solar energy absorbed by the window covering.
    • Visual Transmittance is the amount of light you can actually see with the naked eye.
    • Sound Absorption (Noise Reduction Coefficient ) is the amount of reflected sound absorbed by the window covering. The greater the coefficient, the greater the sound absorption.

  • Buying Shades | Window Coverings | Blinds

    Making the right decision on window coverings is never easy. A lot of people that I deal with basically say “They have no idea” and are really looking for help. Competitors of mine, like the big box stores have people on staff who know very little about the products in the store and are simply there to direct you to the right place. In the end, you have to make a call that could effect the way your home looks for years.

    Our interior design experts are here to help, but here are a few things to remember.

    We like to think with shades and blinds, you can dress your windows in a clean, uncluttered way, enjoy unobstructed outdoor views, and better control the light that comes in from the outside. You can always add swags or valances later if you like them, but we think shades and blinds look great all by themselves, and there are so many to choose from. Drapery and valances are another big part of our business so we can do it all for you.

    Blinds are considered “hard” window treatments. They have slats, or vanes, that tilt or angle to control the amount of light entering a room. They can also be fully opened, or pulled up, for an unobstructed view. Today, most blinds come with a rod that twists to tilt the vanes and a pull cord that lifts them (we also offer cordless systems and motorization). Blinds can have horizontal or vertical vanes (narrow ones are often called mini-blinds), and they can be made of vinyl, wood, and wood alternatives, or the old standby: aluminum.

    Shades are “soft” window treatments that can be raised or lowered for privacy and light control without sacrificing the view outside. They may be opened from the bottom up or from the top down — or both. Keep in mind that “shade” is used to describe a wide variety of window coverings, including insulating cellular shades or honeycombe (made of fabric folded into distinctive honeycomb-shaped cells), fabric Roman shades (featuring flat horizontal folds and a pull-cord mechanism threaded through rings at the back), and “shadings” (hybrid window covers with movable fabric vanes suspended between two sheer fabric facings). The shades also come with numerous options like cordless and top down/bottom up. Don’t forget about motorization too.
